Val Viola

Val Viola: an unmissable four seasons destination for lovers of immersive experiences

Find out more about this fantastic valley, enchanting in every season

When we suggest an excursion to our guests, Val Viola is always present.

Enchanting in every season, this charming Valley is about fifteen km from Bormio, on the road to Livigno.

Once in Arnoga, there is the Val Viola entrance and, depending on the season, there will be the possibility to leave the car there or a little further in the appropriate parking lots.

The Valley becomes more and more beautiful as you explore it. It is a particularly recommended destination because, being for the most part flat or slightly uphill, it is accessible to most without any difficulty.

A series of peaks over 3,000 meters stands out the Cima Piazzi, the Cima Viola and the Cima Dosdè, which frame this rural, idyllic landscape. We recommend it, especially during mid-season or away from peak times because, like all quieter mountain environments, it increases its beauty and can generate unique sensations.

Val Viola is an unmissable destination in all seasons. Given the spaces’ breadth, it can be wild even on the most popular days: just explore further to savour the silence and enjoy the swirl of colours.

Here are some tips to consider based on the season in which you decide to visit it.

Val Viola in Summer

In summer, it is a popular destination for many guests of Bormiese, also accessible by families with strollers and hikers with little training. It is an enchanted valley in which to take a dip in uncontaminated nature. In this season, shuttles are available from Arnoga to the end of the paved road, thus avoiding the less pleasant stretch.

To those who love to walk, we suggest taking the day and going to Lake Sasoseo, an alpine pond in Swiss territory, just after the Passo Val Viola. Breathtaking colours and a fabulous view will await you for many picture-perfect selfies!

For families, a stop at the Rifugio Federico in Dosdè is what we recommend. Here, children can play in a spacious flat area, breathing the scent of freedom.

Val Viola in Autumn

If you visit us on an Autumn weekend, when nature has already started to change colours, give yourself a break in Val Viola. You will soon see fairytale sceneries admiring the contrast between the Autumn colours and the white of the first snow that covered the peaks while immersed in the wild nature.

Val Viola in Winter

Not to be missed a Winter experience: whether you want to explore with snowshoes, foot, cross-country skis, or with the fat bike, a bike specially designed to go on snow, the experience will be one to remember.

Here, you can easily find contact with nature. It only takes a day to regenerate yourself from the hectic life that usually takes place in the city. The slow pace of the Valley,  the silence, and the snow and the cold’s muffled sensation are essential elements for a truly immersive and unforgettable experience.

A snowcat always well beats the track to facilitate the approach even to the less experienced.

We highly recommend, in all seasons, a stop at Baita Caricc. It is a unique refuge of its kind, where you can taste the typical flavours of Valtellina while immersed in an authentic atmosphere.

If you want to give yourself a different experience than usual, do not miss dinner at the Caricc refuge. The walk with the full moon, the evening in the hut and the return on foot in the silent forest are magical moments you will likely never forget.

Val Viola in spring

In this season, the Val Viola is a real hidden gem that true connoisseurs of ski mountaineering appreciate. It is well suited to welcome even beginners who can approach this discipline in peace with a Mountain Guide.

Experts will find a wild, remote environment and thrilling snow conditions, which will make your trip highly satisfying.

On the other hand, newbies will be able to try ski mountaineering on safe and undemanding routes, ending the day out with a delicious lunch in one of the typical refuges of the Valley.
